I notice that another reviewer remarks that this is not a book for a college term paper. In fact, Abbott wrote for young people. It is not surprising that someone might think that he wrote for college level, because he wrote for intelligent, well-educated young people. I suspect that his targeted audience was better read than many of our college level readers today. As with his other books, this is a quick read -- a cursory rather than an in-depth look at one period in history. I have found that if you read several in the series, you find that they form a continuous thread.
What I find most interesting is that Abbott assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of the subject. It tells us a lot about what an educated young person was supposed to know in the 19th Century, and about how little we expect of our young people today.
All of this aside, this is an interesting book, especially if read with the reservations mentioned by the other reviewer.

Richard II Makers of History Jacob Abbott 9783847221401 Books Reviews
I purchased this book to get a better knowledge of Richard the second
Spent most of time reading about his grand father and father before his birth
I had already studied these kings
Not very detailed book. I learned more from Wikipedia than from this book. Good for general knowledge I guess.
Pretty general and superficial. Ok for beginners. There are better books done by scholars since this one was written .
Good detail with a very good background history into the monarchs at the time.
A thorough recounting of Richard's life. Covers the period just before his birth to the period just after his death. Lots of interesting details that you won't find in most history books. Well worth a read if you are interested in King Richard II or the late 14th century.
This biography of Richard II is a passable treatment of a very complex historical figure. The author appears to have tried to write the book by a specific deadline, because he skips over some very important events in the young king's life, while belaboring smaller points that he may have covered in earlier biographies of Richard II's ancestors.
The errors he makes are not major using the wrong title or appelation for Richard's numerous uncles and counsins; getting some events out of order, etc. The book would never be recommended reading on a college-level English History class, nor would I ever recommend its use for a term paper.
Still, Abbott, who wrote many decades ago, gives a decent over view of some very turbulent times in English history. Unfortunately, I think that Richard II deserves/ed a better life story than this.
Within this book, you get a history lesson. This book is about King Richard II and so much more. He gives an in-depth account of the Wat's Tyler insurrection of 1381. This event almost plunged England into civil war. You learn that he adored his first wife Anne and cherished his second wife though she was just a child. His form of death is uncertain, though this author gives you an idea of how it may have occurred.
